Sarah’s story is a reminder of what’s possible when we treat people like people, not just patients. Her journey reflects the very best of what healthcare can be when it is person-centered, compassionate, and grounded in dignity.

Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans lives in a #rural area?

The Rural Engagement Program at Texas A&M Health is dedicated to supporting small-town healthcare providers in delivering high-quality care to rural communities. While their work is focused on Texas, its principles are crucial for rural communities across America, which face unique challenges in accessing quality healthcare.

Navigating these barriers is tough. Many rural communities are witnessing the closure of local hospitals, if they even had one to begin with, further extending the distance to critical healthcare services and exacerbating access issues.

Yesterday's discussion was truly inspiring. It encouraged us all to think creatively about how we can better serve rural America and provide consistent, personalized care to our patients.

When we hear news like Dollar General shutting down its mobile clinic, it can seem like the game is over for rural Americans. We built it, but they didn't come. Oh well.

But this is healthcare, not baseball, and a "Field of Dreams" approach isn't necessarily the solution.

I've said it before and will say it again: The most well-intentioned programs and interventions will continue to see low engagement if they approach #ruralhealth as just an access issue.

A major theme of yesterday's discussion was that effective health programs in rural areas, whether in-person or virtual, require a greater focus on relationship building. Solutions must consider what's most important to people in these communities, such as #trust, relationships, values, and belief systems.

Let's continue this important conversation. How can we better implement effective and meaningful healthcare solutions for rural America?

“Last January, we celebrated the opening of a new medical clinic in El Viego, Nicaragua built through our partnership with Palmetto Medical Initiative (PMI). We are excited to announce the construction of a second clinic in Sébaco, a large, agricultural city nestled in the Sébaco Valley.

Construction began at the end of 2014 and the clinic is expected to open by Summer 2015. We're honored to say our organization is actively working to bring quality, accessible medical care to a nation in need.

Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, and we are sure these clinics will have life changing impacts on these communities for many generations to come.”
